NNTP (native) support - Add to Connections

Network News Transfer Protocol

NNTP is the native format used by the internet for News groups (aka Forums).  See:

for some details and information.  The idea is that this would also be available from Connections, in a native in-product (no addon server), so that news group followers could use it to follow

  • Forums
  • Comments (wikis, blogs, etc.)

News readers are very lightweight, and allow the end user to follow a lot of forums at one time, see threading to some degree, etc.  And there are a lot of News readers available, the wiki reference gives a list of some.   The idea is that IBM would support open standards and interfaces to its Connection product.

Some advantages of NNTP over Atom and RSS:

  • Better threading support
  • Better synchronization
  • Better off-line support (read & write)

NNTP support would allow users to become more efficient and effective.

    NNTP is an extremely mature, reliable and efficient way of transfering data for forums and newsgroups. When our organisation was forced to switch from NNTP to Connections-based Forums, we saw an enormous drop in Forum participation and information sharing. NNTP is especially well-suited to technical , scientific and engineering organisations, where users need to share large amounts of complex data. The Forums feature in current releases of Connections is very oriented towards sharing "soft" business and social information; it is almost unusable for technical teams.
